The Venue
The Barn is a multi-purpose event space that includes four distinct spaces: The Barn, The Courtyard, Grandmother’s Park, and The Square in front of The Barn. We encourage hosts to use each of the spaces in your own way – which makes The Barn perfect for a bride or host who desires flexibility, has a creative vision for their event, and doesn’t want a cookie-cutter venue. The venue can host 200 people seated for dinner, 250 people with auditorium style seating, and 350 people standing. And we pride ourselves in having affordable rates as well as discounts for non-profits. Learn more about each of the spaces and inspiration for how to use them.
The Barn
The Barn
The interior of The Barn totals 4,100 square feet, and is a multi-purpose event space that includes an entry foyer, a bridal suite, a groom’s room, as well as women’s, men’s, and handicapped accessible restrooms. The event space itself is 3,200 square feet, and includes a beautiful chandelier, string lights overhead, a balcony that is great for photos, and a stunning, grand doorway which opens out to The Courtyard.
The Barn is ideal for hosting all aspects of a wedding, including the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception including seated dining and dancing. It also looks great with auditorium style seating for church meetings, conferences, movie premiers, theatrical performances, and concerts, or with the space cleared for a wellness retreat or yoga workshop. The space has maximum flexibility and versatility and can be arranged for many different small and large events.
Fun fact: the white balcony inside The Barn was built as a part of the set design for a production of the play “Rumors.” We liked it so much that we kept it in place once the run of the show was over!
The Courtyard
The Courtyard
Step out of The Barn’s dramatic doorway right into The Courtyard. The Courtyard is a 128-foot long brick promenade that terminates at Grandmother’s Park. It is lined with string lights overhead and raised plant beds on the sides that can double as benches. The Courtyard also includes a small grass lawn that hosts can use. If you get the timing right, sunset can bring a gorgeous light show to your guests on the Courtyard. Then, just after sundown, the string lights overhead turn on to create an intimate, romantic night-time atmosphere.
The Courtyard is an ideal setting for a wedding ceremony, with most couples choosing to stand in Grandmother's Park with guests seated in The Courtyard facing the couple. Some brides, however, prefer to face the opposite direction, with The Barn’s stunning doorway as the backdrop for their ceremony. The Courtyard is also an outstanding location for outdoor dining, with guests seated together at one long table. It can be used for a cocktail hour, or as a place for guests to get some fresh air and take a break from dancing. The lawn adjacent to The Courtyard is great for hosting food trucks, lawn games like corn hole, and kids activities.
Fun fact: before The Barn was restored, The Courtyard was known as “the troughs” where cows used to walk and feed. When you visit The Courtyard, see if you can spot the hoof-marks where the cows used to stand and walk!
Grandmother's Park
Grandmother’s Park
Grandmother’s Park is an intimate park at the end of The Courtyard. Grandmother’s Park was opened in 2010 and dedicated to Kay’s mom, Beverly C. Beckett, on the occasion of her 80th birthday. Beverly became the grandmother of Winthrop and her prayers made all of Winthrop possible. Grandmother’s Park includes a beautiful gazebo, statues, and an obelisk with a commemorative plaque. A new wall encloses the space for greater privacy. Grandmother’s Park invites all of us to call forward the spirit and blessings of the Grandmother.
Grandmother’s Park is a reverent setting for a wedding ceremony. Many couples choose to decorate the gazebo to transform it into the altar for their special ceremony. Grandmother’s Park also serves as a great location for a cocktail hour, singing circle, or a group meditation or prayer.
The Square
The Square
In front of The Barn sits The Square. The Square is an outdoor park that is beloved by the Winthrop community, and is yours to use when you rent The Barn. The Square includes a beautiful tree from which to hang lights and chandeliers and is surrounded by benches. The Square frequently comes to life with vintage toys like an antique John Deere tractor and a 1950s Rolls-Royce – which are fun for kids to play on and make great photo ops!
The Square is a beautiful setting for a wedding ceremony, cocktail hour, food trucks, lawn games like corn hole, kids activities, and a spot for guests to get some fresh air and take a break from dancing.
